Zuluk|Dzuluk|Silk Route Sikkim|Zuluk Sojourn Homestay|Zuluk Homestay|Lower Zuluk

Perched on the rugged terrain of the lower Himalayas in East Sikkim, Zuluk or Dzuluk is a hamlet close to the Indo China border. Located strategically at an altitude of around 3000 meters (10100 ft), it is a relatively new and offbeat tourist destination. Dzuluk is your base to explore the newly opened Silk Route Sikkim Circuit of East Sikkim.

Many Travel agents have been using the name of Upper Zuluk as well as Lower Zuluk to confuse and distract tourists. India Beacons Sojourn categorically likes to clarify that there is no place called Lower Zuluk or Upper Zuluk. Zuluk is only a small village and the references to Lower Zuluk actually refers to places or villages situated at much lower altitudes than Dzuluk. Lower Zuluk actually refers to Lingtam, Nimachen as well as Padamchen.

Zuluk derived its importance from its location on the historic Old Silk Route. The route started from Kalimpong and passed through Pedong, Aritar or Lampolkari, Padmchen, Zuluk and Jelepla to Chumbi valley in Tibet. After the Chinese aggression however Nathula is the official corridor between India and China.

There are about 60 families consisting of about 600 people living in Zuluk. They are largely immigrants from Nepal who came and settled here in the hope of a better future. They are very honest, simple, hardworking and hospitable by nature.

Zuluk has an extreme climate. Winter is very severe with snowfalls and freezing temperature while summer is wet and foggy. Due to poor quality of the soil and vagaries of weather, farming is well neigh impossible. Neither there is any scope for practicing cattle rearing as an occupation. Most of the land is fenced and military controlled making it unfit for grazing. The only source of livelihood there is employment in the construction and maintenance of border roads. People live in penury misery.

However, nature has bestowed Zuluk with abundant natural beauty and there are immense tourism potentialities. The tourism boom along the Silk Route Sikkim circuit has opened up a new source of livelihood for these residents.

India Beacons Sojourn has been actively involved in the promotion of Zuluk and the Sikkim Silk Route since 2008, a time when very few people had even heard or dreamt of Zuluk being a tourist destination.
